My Birthday Dinner in July, Early Rainy Season
It’s hard to believe I’m already sharing Part 7 of my #100DaysOfBlue journey. What better place to experience Days 61 through 70 than in beautiful Puerto Vallarta?

Day 62: A Memory of July 11, 2024, Over a Year Ago

"Today is a good day. This week has been a rollercoaster. Watching the sunset over the ocean is so calming. Viewing the deep blue color of the sea during a two-hour seafood dinner with my best friend promotes a blue mind condition. Life is good.馃挋"

This photo holds more than just a view. It holds a memory, a feeling, and a breath of peace during a chaotic time. Over a year ago, I shared these words without realizing how often I’d come back to them. The blue water became more than a visual comfort. It was a space where I could let go, even for a moment, of the stress and emotional weight of caregiving.

My husband’s early Parkinson’s dementia was beginning to change our lives in ways that were hard to explain. The ocean felt steady when nothing else did. It was deep, calming, and quietly powerful.

This journey through #100DaysOfBlue isn’t just about beauty. It’s about reflection, healing, and honoring both the peaceful and the difficult moments. 馃挋

Day 63: Puerto Vallarta's Playa Los Muertos

It was supposed to storm again that afternoon, so I took the dogs for a walk down the Malec贸n earlier in the day. Brunch instead of dinner felt like the right call.

Most of the restaurants were either too busy or hadn’t opened yet. We circled back to Daiquiri Dick’s, and I’m glad we did. Huevos rancheros and fresh orange juice with a view of the ocean were exactly what I needed. 馃挋

Day 64: Dancing on the Beach Video
Watching the Fun Next to the Ocean Waves

I was sitting at a beachside restaurant bar with Max and Sophie, taking in the ocean view. A glass of Cabernet Sauvignon deepened my Blue Mind calm. When a group started dancing on the sand beside the rolling waves, it brought an easy smile to my face.

You may remember that on Day 43 of my 100 Days of Blue Water, I was in Santorini, Greece. (See more in Days 41–50 of 100 Days of Blue Water, Part 5: The Mediterranean to the Gulf of Mexico 馃挦). The deep blue sea view from the Santorini cable car was unforgettable. The only souvenir I brought home from that Virgin Voyage was a Santorini jigsaw puzzle—a perfect reminder of the many Blue Water days I experienced on that trip.

Day 68 of Blue in the Marina Vallarta

Lunch and View at El Faro Marina Vallarta Restaurant

After a gathering at the Living Room Bookstore on August 1, I had lunch at El Faro in Marina Vallarta, a high-end international restaurant located inside a lighthouse. From the panoramic 360-degree views, I could see all at once what makes Puerto Vallarta so stunning—this is truly the place where the sea meets the mountains.

Day 70 of Blue Water

A Quiet Day on Los Muertos Beach, Puerto Vallarta

I walked with the dogs along the beach and stopped for fish and chips for dinner at the Sea Monkey on the Puerto Vallarta Malec贸n. I forgot to take a photo! Let's just say, there were no leftovers for lunch tomorrow.

Our First Day on the Beach
Since Max's eye surgery 2 Months Before

That day was Max’s first time on the beach since his eye surgery before I adopted him. I didn’t want him getting sand in the healing eye, so until then, we’d enjoyed the ocean views from a distance. His eye actually looked pretty good at the time. But four months—and a lot of treatment and love later, he was blind in that eye. The inflammation kept worsening, and his vet eventually recommended removing it. He’s now healing well. The stitches are out, he’s no longer uncomfortable, and once his shaved eyebrow grows back, he’ll be as handsome as ever.

The Sea Turns Gray on August Afternoons
As It Reflects the Gathering Clouds

The fishermen, white egret, and pelicans were sure the fish were in close. The pelicans were the only ones I saw catch anything.

What a mellow scene.

Blue Mind is the mildly meditative state people fall into when they are near, in, under, or on water. It is peace. It is the feeling of calmness and relaxation that comes from being in or near the water, and it has a positive impact on our mental health.

100 Days of Blue is a campaign inspired by marine biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, encouraging people to spend time near, in, on, or under water for its positive impact on well-being. To carry on his legacy, many people are posting one blue water photo or video a day for 100 days, often with the hashtag #100daysofblue.

I don’t mean “blue” as in sadness. Blue Water gives us Blue Mind—a calm, lightly meditative state that comes from being near, in, under, or on water. Marine biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols coined the term and even wrote a book about it.

Day 55 of 100 Blue Water Experiences
Lunch at Marina Vallarta, Admiring the View

Marina Vallarta offers a different kind of blue. I don’t often make the trip—it feels almost like another city, with its distinct atmosphere and the 30–45 minutes it takes to get there by Uber. But a Friday gathering at the Living Room Bookstore and Caf茅 drew me in, and afterward I lingered over lunch with a refreshing view of the water.

Day 56 of Blue Water: The Pacific Ocean
Los Muertos Pier Viewed During a Morning Walk
Each morning, I walk Sophie and Max, often exploring new routes through the neighborhood. One of my favorite views is the pier framed by the ocean just three blocks away—especially when the sky is clear and blue.
Day 57 of Blue Water: Sea Monkey Restaurant
Hat on Top of the Beach Palapa and Ocean View
On my morning walk, I passed the Sea Monkey restaurant and noticed a giant red, green, and white hat perched on a palapa. At first, I was puzzled—until I spotted the emblem and realized it was a playful nod to the Mexican flag.
Day 58 of Blue: Remembering Greece and the Sea
A View From the Top Deck of Virgin Voyage's Ship
The Aegean Sea was stunning from the top deck of Virgin Voyage’s Resilient Lady during my 11-day Mediterranean cruise. On one shore day, I chose to stay aboard, and the nearly empty ship made the experience especially peaceful. (See Part 5 of this series for more cruise photos.)
Day 59 of Blue Water: World Blue Mind Day
My Evening Beach View in Puerto Vallarta
World Blue Mind Day fell on Wednesday, July 23, 2025—a yearly celebration honoring the legacy of Dr. Wallace J. Nichols. I marked the occasion with dinner at a beachfront restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, enjoying the view of the water and beach activity as the day came to a close.
Day 60 of Blue Water: My First Birthday Alone
Barcelona Tapas Dinner with an Ocean View
This was my first birthday since Jon moved out, and I felt a little sad. To cheer myself up, I treated myself to dinner at Barcelona Tapas, a hillside restaurant with sweeping ocean views. They gave me a prime corner table, where I watched the sky and sea shift colors from 6:30 to 8:00. I’ve always thought the most striking beauty appears in those few quiet minutes after the sun slips below the horizon.

You may have noticed that blue water often appears on my book covers. A perfect example is my In Sickness and In Health novel series. These heartfelt stories follow Jake as he faces bipolar disorder, Parkinson’s disease, and early memory decline, and Lindsay as she grows from loving wife into devoted caregiver. Their journey is a moving reminder that, even in life’s hardest seasons, love endures.

Some friends and readers have asked why I’m traveling alone now. Where is Jon? We have always done everything together, it seems.

But not always. Fifteen years ago, Jon and I separated during a manic time. Jon was diagnosed with bipolar type II disorder soon afterward, and treatment was successful. It was painful, but we were able to revive our relationship.

As part of my healing, I wrote a book called Just Another Manic Moment: A Novel, about the challenges of living with a person who has bipolar disorder. It’s d茅j脿 vu for me. I’ve lived it once, and now Jon’s mania has returned. He has moved to a small town and started a new life. Yes, I worry about a 75-year-old man with Parkinson’s disease and bipolar disorder living alone in a motorhome far from healthcare facilities. Still, he’s happy building and repairing things, and doing his own traveling for now. I am learning to let him go and focus on self-care.

If you know someone who might benefit from reading this book, please consider sharing it with them. I have reduced the price of the eBook for a limited time beginning August 4, 2025, to $0.99 on Amazon.com and £0.99 in the United Kingdom. BLUE WATER Part 4: Days 31 through 40馃挦 Traveling Alone #100daysofblue

 100 Days of Blue Continues

New Memories of Traveling Alone
Searching for Blue Mind from Blue Water
The blue mind effect is a mildly meditative state, a feeling of peace associated with water. Water can produce physical and mental health benefits by being near, in, under, or on it, especially if it’s blue water.

I have included ten of my Blue Water photos here, covering Days 31 through 40 of the 100 Days of Blue.

Thank goodness, I have an upstairs source with a beautiful sunset view. It's so much prettier than my camera can capture. The blue water of the pool, illuminated by the lights, is stunning against the gray-blue ocean as the sun sets. Now the thunder, lightning, and rain have started. There's a rainbow 馃寛!

Day 34 of Blue Water
Piraeus, Greece June 28, 2025

I walked to this highly rated beach in Piraeus, Greece. Google Maps said it was only 1.1 miles. I must have taken a wrong turn and gone around this pretty marina instead of bypassing it. How was I to know?! Those street signs are all Greek to me. And Maps wasn't working on my phone without Wi-Fi.

After 7000 steps (over three miles) in 94-degree heat, up and down hills, I couldn't find a single open pub or cafe to cool off and enjoy the view. I wasn't going down to that beach because I knew I was in no condition to climb back up.

My Uber app wasn't working, and there wasn't a taxi to be found. Heat exhaustion was now a concern, so I ducked into a deli that was closing and asked if they could call a taxi for me.

The three men shook their heads and said it would be difficult because taxis are all busy during tourist season. While I enjoyed the air conditioning and a chair, one man spent ten minutes outside flagging taxis. When he was finally successful, I thanked him and tried to give him a tip, but he shook his head and let me know how much the taxi ride should cost — 10 euros. And that's exactly what the nice taxi driver charged me. No Blue Mind from viewing the ocean, but I met some friendly Greek people who spoke enough English to help me.

A Beach Club in Kusadasi, Turkey July 4, 2025

After two days of cultural tours, I spent the last day in Turkey relaxing at a beach club. It was a very hot day, so cooling off in the ocean was a refreshing experience.

The Kusadasi city sign and the fort on the island were the view I saw when I opened the curtains that morning. I never sensed the ship docking as I slept.

Then, I watched a third large cruise ship coming in. The view from the captain's cam on the room's TV is always interesting. I watched hundreds of tourists streaming off the ship for early cultural tours. Virgin Voyages is extremely organized, maintaining a calm atmosphere. I appreciate that as I search for healing here in the Mediterranean. I hadn't planned to do this cruise alone.馃挋

Have you read my novels? If so, the terms "Blue Mind" and "Blue Water Effect" will be familiar. These medical fiction books revolve around various mental illnesses and the quest for diagnosis and treatment. I recommend starting with Just Another Manic Moment: A Novel (In Sickness and In Health #1).

The value of living near blue water is a significant aspect of my stories and my life. My goal is to pass this knowledge to others.

Enjoy the adventure!
