Birthday Weekend in Yelapa—What an Adventure! (And a 99¢ eBook Promotion)

 Yelapa, México is Another World

The Village is Only Accessible by Water Taxi

Jon has talked about spending a weekend in Yelapa for years. So that’s what we did for his birthday. We loved it—what an adventure!

Breakfast at Cafe Bahia

The food at Café Bahia was so fresh and delicious. I highly recommend it!

Jon’s favorite meal at Cafe Bahia was Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, and Avocado Sandwich, made with amazingly fresh bread. He is looking happy and healthy at 73 years old!

There are no cars in Yelapa. The streets are winding and narrow—a maze of cobblestones. People use four-wheelers, mules, and wheelbarrows to make deliveries.

While exploring on foot, we discovered beautiful murals throughout the village. Many of the murals were memorials for fishermen.

I also enjoyed the colorful flowers. The trumpet vines were unusual because they had several flower colors on one vine.

Paragliding is a popular sport in Yelapa. Boats pull the person with their parasail high into the air. Then the parasailer disconnects and slowly glides back to the beach. I was lucky to capture this paraglider, tree, and frigatebird together.

We looked inside the Yelapa church, one of the prettiest buildings in the village.

Walking up to the Yelapa waterfall, we worked up an appetite. Since it was the dry season, there was only a trickle in the waterfall.

It was time to discover a new restaurant. We were impressed with how good and inexpensive the food was in the restaurants we visited.

Taqueria Los Abuelos

I want to return to Taqueria Los Abuelos for chimichangas and quesadillas—if we can find that restaurant again! Their address is Unnamed Road, Yelapa. We had to ask several locals to help us through the maze. Everyone was friendly to us.

The Arrachara Chimichanga was My Favorite!

Jon is already talking about returning to Yelapa for a few days. An important lesson we learned: Rather than taking the hour-long water taxi from the Puerto Vallarta Muelle, we would take an Uber to Boca de Tomatlán and then take a much shorter water taxi ride from there. The water was rough on the return trip to Puerto Vallarta at 4:30 in the afternoon, and the super-panga moved fast—it was jarring for our backs.

    1. Thanks, Emily. I kept saying to Jon, it's not a fancy birthday weekend. He said it was just what he wanted❣
