Hurricane Lidia, Festivities, and a Paperback Release!

 November 2023 Newsletter

I Took Photos of Our Plants Before Hurricane Lidia,

Fearing They Would be Thrashed by the Severe Wind

Lidia was not the first hurricane we've experienced in Mexico, but she was the scariest. The ferocious wind took down many beautiful mature trees, power lines, solar panels, and roofs and shattered numerous windows.

Thank Goodness We Charged Our Kindles Before Lidia!

Jon and I spent the dark evening reading on our Kindles. We waited the storm out in an inner bedroom away from all windows. Hearing the crashing noises outside was very frightening. Our condo unit was undamaged, we were safe, and our plants survived. Many were not as fortunate.

Preparing Supplies for Hurricane Victims
Jon, I, and many others volunteered at the Vallarta Food Bank to package basic cleaning supplies and food for families who had lost so much. Read more HERE.

MEXICO FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE: A Novel is Available!

 September 21, 2023 Release Date!

I have exciting news—MEXICO FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE: A Novel is now available for pre-order! Order the eBook now through Amazon worldwide and receive it on September 21, 2023.

While this story has some similarities to my life with Jon as expats in Mexico, the book is fiction. Some places named are factual but used fictitiously, giving a realistic picture of Healthy Living in Mexico. You can take a look at the description HERE.

Living in paradise was a dream...
until it became the way to find healing.

See expat life through Jake and Lindsay's eyes in this series of novels. Leaving the stress of their careers in the United States was the best decision they made. Moving to Sayulita, Mexico, was wonderful until healthcare became important.

In the third novel of this riveting series, a couple faces insurmountable odds, battling advancing Parkinson’s disease, access to medication, and other healthcare challenges in Mexico while the world is gripped by the coronavirus pandemic.

We're On the Road in Mexico Again in a Motorhome! Puerto Vallarta to Patzcuaro and Back

From Patcuaro, Michoacan to Puerto Vallarta

Celebrating Our Purchase in Patzcuaro
It's been three and a half years since we sold our fourth motorhome, and we've missed traveling in an RV! Not only that, but Jon was bored and needed a project.

When we saw this 2005 Minnie Winnie with Mexico registration for sale in Patzcuaro, we decided to find a driver to take us to see it. We purchased it and started planning our trip home to Puerto Vallarta!

Jon and Sophie with Our 2005 Minnie Winnie
The first thing we decided was that we needed to take shorter drives during his trip than we did in the past. So, we divided the route from Patzcuaro to Puerto Vallarta into four legs, stopping for a few nights at each of the three RV Parks along the way.
We Made This 485 Mile Trip, Slowly Over a Week
Our first stop was at Roca Azul RV Park Resort in Jocotepec, Jalisco, on Lake Chapala. We've stayed there many times and always enjoy it.
Roca Azul's Lighthouse Overlooking Lake Chapala
Roca Azul's Pool and Picnic Area During the Summer
After two nights at Roca Azul, we headed to Santa Maria del Oro Lake in Nayarit. We stayed at Koala Bungalows and RV Park. It was inexpensive, 300 pesos per night, but the services were in poor condition. The lake is at 3500 feet, so the August weather is comfortable, a nice break from the heat and humidity we would be experiencing in the beach towns. But we missed the Pacific Ocean, so we headed to La Penita.
La Penita de Jaltemba Malecon
La Penita de Jaltemba, Nayarit, is one of the beach towns on Hwy. 200. We stayed at Little Rigs RV Park for a few nights before heading to Puerto Vallarta. La Penita hasn't changed much since we were there many years ago, though the Malecon has been upgraded.

(Sophie is Under the Table)
We're glad to be back in Puerto Vallarta. Stay tuned for our monthly motorhome adventures.

Book Description

Jon and Terry have been living in Mรฉxico for almost seven years now. They are still learning lessons about the culture, new places to visit, alternative ways to travel within the country, and some dangers in everyday life. Health care, buying and selling real estate, and end-of-life planning differ from those north of the border, so there is much to learn about these important issues.

Living the rustic life in a Sayulita barrio, a Mexican neighborhood, for six years was fun. But what happens when medical and dental care needs are not met in that small beach town? Time to reevaluate where to live and consider a move. Using the pros and cons list they compiled for the book “Retirement Before the Age of 59” (Healthy Living in Mexico #2) and recent experiences, they began considering a move to a bigger city with more to offer. Researching condominiums near the ocean led them to Puerto Vallarta.

Jon and Terry may have retired from RVing, but they still travel to interesting places in Mรฉxico. Follow them on their adventures and in everyday life as you read their stories about the last two years—more lessons learned during life in Mรฉxico.

Thank you for reading my books. I appreciate your reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.

I invite you to follow me on Medium where I'll be writing about our life and travels in Mexico.

OUR 12 FAVORITE PUERTO VALLARTA RESTAURANTS--So Far! (Part 3)

Mexican Food Tonight or Something Else?

Searching for the Best Baja-Style Fish Tacos in PV

Before we branch out to the Puerto Vallarta Marina area, we’re still evaluating restaurants in Old Town, also called the Romantic Zone. We love that we can safely walk to and from our home to any place in this tourist area. The Mexican name for this neighborhood is Colonia Emiliano Zapata, a central area of early Puerto Vallarta. Spanish-style family homes and local businesses are interspersed with new condominiums, art galleries, and restaurants.

With a large number of restaurants serving Mexican food here, the competition is stiff. There are so many good ones, it’s difficult to choose the best, so our choices will change as we try others. But, for now, these are our favorites.

Once a week, we choose a Mexican restaurant. On our next evening out, Jon usually wants an Italian or a good steak place. For our third choice of the week, I often select an Asian or seafood restaurant. By then we have enough leftovers in the freezer for a delicious meal at home while watching the sunset and the world go by from our balcony.

Pleasant Decor in Archie's Wok

7. Archie's Wok

Archie’s Wok has long been a favorite of ours when we’re craving Asian food. During high season, by the time we arrive at our usual dinner hour of 6:00, the restaurant is packed and there’s a waiting list. They don’t take reservations, so this week we decided to go at 5:00 to get a table and I’m glad we did.

We discovered they have a Light Lunch Menu available from 2:00 to 6:00 PM. For 169 pesos (about $8.00US), you can choose one item from each of the three sections. Jon and I each selected the same items, a Lumpia Filipino Eggroll, Pancit Filipino Pasta Stir-Fried with Vegetables and Mushrooms, and Grilled Beef Skewer Korean Sesame Marinade.

Our Archie's Wok Light Lunch Selections

Delicious and a great value! We’ll be going back again soon to try the other options on that “early-bird” menu, especially the Singapore Chicken and Calamari Fried in Light Beer Batter.

8. Joe Jack's Fish Shack

When we’re hungry for fresh seafood served in a fun atmosphere in the heart of Old Town, Joe Jack's Fish Shack is one of our favorites. The service, food, and prices are excellent, so be prepared for this restaurant to be packed during high season. Joe Jack’s serves one of the best fish and chips we’ve had in Mรฉxico. Occasionally we share an iceberg wedge salad when we’re craving the mingled flavors of bacon and blue cheese.

Fried chicken is one of Joe Jack’s specialties when it’s not too busy here in Puerto Vallarta, usually on Thursday and Sunday. A couple of weeks ago, we were lucky enough to arrive on one of their last fried chicken Sundays of this year's low season. We asked for one order with an extra piece of chicken, a total of four pieces split between us. It was more than enough food—each of us had a side of mashed potatoes with gravy, corn on the cob, and coleslaw. We order fried food here in Mexico extra frito, so the chicken came well-fried and crispy. Everything was delicious and satisfied our need for some American food!

Split Order of Fried Chicken--Extra Crispy

We’ve learned that during high season (mid-November through April), we need to make a reservation for Joe Jack’s, especially if we want to sit upstairs at a table next to the railing overlooking the street. It’s always entertaining to watch the action on Basilio Badillo street and across the street at Margarita Grill. People watching while sipping a glass of cold wine or beer is half the fun.

Fried Chicken Will Return... Mas Tarde

9. Canto del Mar

We’ve dined at several of the beachfront palapa restaurants along the Malecรณn. After two visits, we decided that Canto del Mar (Song of the Sea) is our favorite, so far. The seafood is fresh and a good value. The Baja-style fish tacos are the best we’ve found on the beach along the south end of the Malecรณn. (El Barracuda in colonia 5 the de Diciembre also has wonderful fish tacos).

Sorting and Slicing Fresh Fish in the Clean Kitchen

The Gourmet Habafuego habanero ranch salsa our waiter suggested makes the tacos extra tasty. We raved about the delicious spicy flavor and asked where we could buy it. He told us it was a special order from Guadalajara, not sold in stores here, and offered to sell us a bottle. We’re glad we had him add it to our check—it’s delicious on quesadillas, Mexican eggs, salads, and sandwiches.

Canto del Mar is a great place to watch the amazing Bahia de Banderas sunsets. I look forward to another relaxing evening watching the sky change colors while sipping a Cielo Rojo—a clamato-beer mixture that I’ve recently discovered is a refreshing alternative to wine on a warm afternoon.

Healthy Living and Traveling in Mexico June Newsletter & New Book Release

Beaches in the Mexican State of Nayarit Are Closed, But…

The Ocean is Full of People Playing
In Sayulita, the ocean is often full of people, locals and visitors, playing, cooling off, surfing, and paddleboarding. Some people sit on blankets having picnics. It’s wonderful to enjoy a meal at a beachside restaurant with an unobstructed view of the ocean as umbrellas and beach chairs are still prohibited at this time.

But once every week or two, groups of police and National Guard or Marines come to the beach and ask people to leave. It is a peaceful yet sad scene as disappointed beach-lovers slowly pack up and head into town. We don't yet know if our governor will open our beaches in July... likely he won't.

The May "Healthy Living and Traveling in Mexico" Newsletter Has Been Published!

My Mexican Permanent Residency Visa and a NEW BOOK RELEASE!

I’m officially a permanent Mexican resident!
Hola from Sayulita, Mรฉxico!
I was so relieved when I was notified in April to go to the Mexican immigration (INM) office in Nuevo Vallarta for fingerprinting to complete my Permanent Resident Visa application! The office was open, but only one woman was working at the desk, so the wait was about two hours—but they were open and processing applications. She fingerprinted all ten fingers and then told me to come back for my card in two weeks.
With so many government offices closed during the COVID-19 lockdown period, I was skeptical about whether my card would actually be ready in two weeks. But on April 27th, my representative read more...
