A Wonderful New Year's Eve Trip--The Rhythms of the Night Cruise to Playa Las Caletas

The New Alma Show was Spectacular

One of the Amazing Acts in the Rhythms of the Night Show
We found a wonderful way to stay up until midnight and watch the spectacular fireworks show in Puerto Vallarta--go by boat to the new Rhythms of the Night show, Alma. The sunset cruise along the Puerto Vallarta shore to Las Caletas beach was wonderful. The gourmet buffet dinner was the best we've had there. And the new "Alma" show at the amphitheater in the jungle with incredible acrobatics and dance was amazing. Seeing the spectacular fireworks show from the boat on the return trip made the night perfect!

We highly recommend this trip if you are in Puerto Vallarta. Remember to bring a jacket if you go during the winter--it's cool after sunset out there on the boat.

VISITING SAN SEBASTIÁN DEL OESTE—An Old Pueblo Mágico

Jon and I have talked for years about visiting San Sebastián del Oeste, a 400 to 500-year-old Pueblo Mágico (a Mexican Magic Town) in the Sierra Madre mountains of Jalisco state. We decided it was a good time to go now that the rains have stopped and before the weather turns too cool in the mountains. I convinced Jon to take an all-day, all-inclusive tour for our first visit to this charming town and we were glad we did.

San Sebastián del Oeste's Plaza and Cathedral's Bell Tower

Our first stop was Panadería Carmen’s Bakery. Jon and I shared one pastry, a flaky jam-filled empanada, and it was delicious. We wished we would have shared one more! The courtyard and gardens there were beautiful and relaxing.

Jon Talking to the Birds at Panadería Carmen's Bakery

I was amazed at the mature banana tree and its 2-foot long bunch of bananas, some of the fruit from the bottom already harvested. Jon talked to the pair of parrots for a while but they were busy building a nest inside a gourd so weren’t too interested in talking. We’d like to go back to Carmen’s bakery again.

How did this Banana Tree NOT Fall Down!

La Quinta Mary (The Fifth Mary in the family) coffee roaster was our second rest stop. We had a tour of the edge of the plantation where our guide gave us an education on café de altura (coffee of the highlands), coffee roasting, and the family history. It was very interesting to learn that the citrus trees planted interspersed with the coffee plants provide a natural insect repellant for the coffee berries—organic farming.

Beautiful Macaws in the Aviary at La Quinta Mary

The four macaws were screeching furiously when the group of tourists passed by, possibly looking for attention or hoping someone would feed them. Jon came up to their aviary and started “talking” to them in macaw language and they settled down immediately. Jon is a “bird whisperer”. As he continued to mimic them, they looked at him, stretched, and nonchalantly started to preen. One even closed her eyes and took a nap, hypnotized by Jon’s crooning.

Blue Agave Plants, Years from Maturity

We stopped at a blue agave field for a look and education on growing the plants and making tequila, raicilla, and mezcal, distilled products of agave in the state of Jalisco. Our tour guide smilingly promised tequila tasting later in the day.

After we arrived in the village, once a thriving silver and gold mining town established in 1605, we toured the Casa Museo Doña Conchita Encarnación museum, the beautiful cathedral which was constructed starting in 1608, and the Casa de La Cultura (House of Culture). Then we were free to wander around the plaza and along cobblestone roads to admire the old adobe and brick buildings and to shop. I enjoyed the cooler, dry mountain air in San Sebastian del Oeste while Jon admired the old architecture.

The San Sebastian del Oeste plaza was beautiful and peaceful, a complete contrast to Sayulita’s, the Pueblo Mágico where we lived for six years. We wondered what it would be like on a Saturday evening with live music and lovers strolling hand in hand.

San Sebastian del Oeste's Peaceful, Pretty Plaza

Our last stop was for lunch and tequila tasting at Hacienda Don Lalin, a small distillery and brewery. The multi-course, freshly prepared lunch was traditional Mexican food served family-style with six to eight people sharing a table. We enjoyed getting to know travelers from Britain and Michigan while we dined. Finally, it was time for tequila tasting. We loved the almond tequila and chocolate-coffee flavored tequila, which would be delicious over ice cream or ice with milk for a dessert.

We booked our tour with Vallarta Adventures and recommend them. Having a friendly, knowledgeable guide who is bilingual and a good driver to expertly handle those windy mountain roads made it worth the price. One note for future tours—the instructions did not mention using insect repellent against the no-see-ums, but we had itchy, red evidence of their bites the next day. We were glad we had worn long pants, socks, and shoes as our legs and feet were spared the invisible insect attacks.

It was a worthwhile day-tour. Even Jon agreed.

OUR CATAMARAN TRIP TO MARIETAS ISLANDS WITH VALLARTA ADVENTURES

A Wonderful Adventure When Family Come to Visit

Jon and I splurged on a week of fun tourist activities when my sister, Cindy and her husband, Al came to visit us in Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita this month! Usually, we live pretty much like the locals in Sayulita. But this was a perfect time to take a catamaran trip to the Marietas Islands where we were looking forward to snorkeling. Vallarta Adventures Eco Discovery Tour included even more enjoyable activities than we expected.
Cindy and Al Enjoying the Catamaran Trip to the Islands
On the catamaran trip to the islands, we were excited to see three whales, one spouting as they breached the surface. The captain motored around the Marietas Islands before anchoring to show the guests how beautiful this protected national park and world heritage site is.

Once anchored, we got ready to snorkel. On this tour, we swam quite a distance around rocks, coral reefs, and through an archway with a slight current, so we were required to wear life vests. It turns out, the vests allowed us to be more relaxed while we enjoyed viewing the marine life and playing in the ocean. The water temperature was perfectly comfortable, refreshing yet warm. The tour guides made sure we had fun and captured photos of us enjoying the snorkeling portion of our trip.

Cindy and Al Had a Blast Snorkeling!

Snorkeling with My Sister, Cindy, for the First Time

Back onboard the catamaran, we were cooled off from our swim but ravenous! Lunch was served—a build-your-own sandwich smorgasbord and drinks from the open bar, alcoholic and nonalcoholic. We climbed back up to the top deck to eat while the boat made another pass around the island, giving us a close-up view of the many birds living there, including blue-footed boobies, pelicans, and magnificent frigatebirds.
Jon and Terry Back Onboard After Snorkeling
Next stop—Playa Majahuitas, a beautiful tropical beach where we could choose to relax in hammocks or on lounge chairs or play in the water. We did it all! Paddleboarding was our favorite water activity. Many chose to kayak in the bay. The water was amazingly clear, blue, and pleasantly warm. I enjoyed relaxing while I floated on my back in the still, saline sea, peering up at the blue sky that created the hue of the water.

On the trip back to the Marina Vallarta, the crew members, dressed in costumes and wigs, entertained us with hilarious skits. Our 6 ½-hour adventure was nearing an end. As we disembarked, a large, brilliantly-colored iguana posed near the bay for photos, completing a perfect adventure in Puerto Vallarta.

RHYTHMS OF THE NIGHT IN PUERTO VALLARTA--Our 25th Anniversary Celebration

A Weekend Getaway

Jon and Terry Entering Rhythms of the Night
One advantage of living in Sayulita, less than an hour north of Puerto Vallarta, is that we can travel a short distance from our small-village life for a great selection of big-city adventures. Our 25th Anniversary was a perfect opportunity to spend a long weekend celebrating in Puerto Vallarta.
We decided to splurge on Rhythms of the Night, a dinner and show put on by Vallarta Adventures. I had heard many positive comments about this tourist activity, beginning with a boat trip to the romantic, private beach called Playa Las Caletas. Jon doesn’t usually go for tours and touristy shows, but being the accommodating husband that he is, he agreed to book the trip.
The Puerto Vallarta Trailer Park
Our motorhome comes in handy for getaways like this one, so we’re always glad we have it stored in the area. No hotel rooms for us—we carry our suitcase, our bathroom, our bedroom, our kitchen, and Bella, our doxy, with us wherever we go. The Puerto Vallarta Trailer Park was our home away from home, a tropical garden setting, a quiet oasis away from the city traffic noises, yet only two blocks from the bus stop. We could catch a short, inexpensive bus to the Romantic Zone for night life or the marina for the Rhythms of the Night event.
Kelly's Pour Favor Saloon & Cookhouse
We started our celebration Thursday evening at Kelly’s Pour Favor Saloon and Cookhouse in the Romantic Zone. The Gecko Band was playing rock ‘n’ roll and the house was packed. We managed to belly up to the bar and eventually secured stools. The music was great, including two harmonica players who took turns playing with the band. Singalongs included a loud and rowdy version of “Living Next Door to Alice”. Jon’s fried chicken dinner and my sweet potato fries with chipotle mayo were perfect saloon meals.
Jon and Terry Posing with a Macaw
Friday afternoon, the dark clouds rolled in, and we wondered if we would get rained on at the Rhythms of the Night show. We packed jackets and rain ponchos in a backpack to be safe, but by the time we checked in for our sunset cruise to Las Caletas, the sky had cleared. While waiting to board our boat, we settled in at a tiki bar for our first celebration margarita. That’s when an animal conservation group introduced us to their Macaw, let him sit our shoulders for photos, and had him kiss our cheeks for more photos. Naturally, we had to purchase all of the photos as memories of this once in a lifetime anniversary celebration.
Disembarking and Entering the Tropical Jungle

The hour-long sunset cruise was enjoyable with an open bar and entertainment by the crew members. We didn’t see any whales that afternoon, but the view of the Puerto Vallarta shoreline past Mismaloya to Las Caletas was beautiful. After disembarking at the dock, we followed the lighted path into the tropical jungle to the restaurant. Here, the pre-dinner show began.
An Actress Portrays People from Ancient Times

Over 3000 candles and many torches lit the paths and seating areas, creating a glowing, romantic atmosphere. Along the way, we were constantly presented with beauty and entertainment, from waterfalls to costumed actors portraying people from ancient times and beings from the spirit world. I especially enjoyed the trio of musicians, one of which played a crisp tune by tapping a stick against a row of hanging wine and liquor bottles filled with different levels of liquid.
Musicians, One Playing Wine Bottles

Caleta, A Romantic Setting with Over 3000 Candles

We dined at a prime table on the upper terrace overlooking the clear blue ocean and two floating docks complete with palm trees, hammocks, lounge chairs, and shade umbrellas. As our attentive waiter served us margaritas, the sunset colors softened, mixing coral pink clouds with the clear blue sky, all reflected on the ocean below, adding to the romance of the evening. We couldn’t have asked for more from the dinner experience.
Sunset View From Our Dinner Table

From the restaurant, we followed another candle-lit path through the palm forest to the outdoor theater where a skit was already underway on the stage, entertaining those seated and waiting for the show to begin. The backdrop was an actual pyramid, towering high above the stage. The lighting projected on the pyramid changed with each act, altering the setting from a waterfall to a Mayan temple and various other colorful structures.
Skeletons Performing Acrobatics

We were very impressed with the quality of acts and music—even Jon was glad we had experienced this show called Savia. As described on the Rhythms of the Night website, “Powerful images, original music, dance and acrobatic performances surround you in this magical environment. Let your imagination soar with Savia: The Legend of the 5 Suns.” Jon and I agreed that the show was magical. I have included a brief video below to tempt you to take in this spectacular show. We were told that the show changes periodically, so we plan to attend it again sometime in the future, hopefully taking our children and grandchildren to see it.
Saturday night was our last evening to go out on the town in Puerto Vallarta. We decided to ride the bus to the Romantic Zone and then walk to the beach. Our goal was to find a restaurant that wasn’t too fancy (no white tablecloths for us), but still had tables set on the sand and a menu of good food and wine at a reasonable price. We were hoping to get to view one of Puerto Vallarta’s famous sunsets that night, and we weren’t disappointed.
Sunset from Langostinos in Puerto Vallarta

Langostinos Restaurant & Bar, on the beach near the Muelle de Playa Los Muertos, was a wonderful choice for the food, service, people watching, and amazing sunset. While seafood was our original thought, we ended up ordering the Chateaubriand steak, a tender, juicy, flavorful tenderloin prepared perfectly. It was large enough for us to share and take how a portion for lunch the next day. As we sipped our wine and relaxed, the brilliant fire-orange and blue sunset was the perfect conclusion to our memorable 25th Anniversary weekend.

Terry and Jon found a way to escape the rat race, retire early, and to make their money go further. This story will inspire others to quit their jobs, retire earlier rather than later, and begin living a healthier life, while having more fun and doing what they enjoy. Why wait?
Making the decision to retire early was the easy part. Deciding where to retire took more travel in their motorhome and lots of thought. The process of selling and giving away their excess possessions so they could begin living a simplified, healthier life was a journey in itself.
