 What is Blue Mind?

Day 21 of 100 Blue Water Photos
Blue Mind from being IN THE WATER!

Jon and Terry Snorkeling at Marietas Islands 2019

I’ve included the term Blue Mind in many of my books. I often refer to it as the Blue Water Effect. Dr. Wallace J Nichols, a marine biologist, popularized the phrase with his book Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do. Blue Mind is the mildly meditative state people fall into when they are near, in, under, or on water. It is peace. It is the feeling of calmness and relaxation that comes from being in or near the water, and it has a positive impact on our mental health.

This is one of my favorites of the 100 Blue Photos, so far. I've been saving it, literally dreaming about it. It brings back childhood memories of times spent with family in our boat. The rocking sensation, the warmth (usually), and all the sports my parents introduced us to. Waterskiing, fishing, crabbing, swimming, driving the boat, and jumping up on the seats so the crabs couldn't 🦀 pinch us. And sleeping under the bow was so soothing. I had Blue Water experiences 💙 often in my childhood. I appreciate my parents for giving me that.
